STEP ONE - SHOULD I APPLY?
Protecting New Zealand and New Zealanders can be an interesting and rewarding job. It is a busy and challenging environment and Customs needs people that are dedicated and hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity and performance. We also need a diverse workforce and welcome applications from people with a range of skills, experience and backgrounds.
All candidates need to be able to meet the following security requirement prior to applying for a vacancy:
Before you apply it’s important you think about whether this job is right for you. This site is dedicated to roles primarily in the Border Operations team. This role is critical to promoting and protecting New Zealand and as a Customs Officer you will primarily focus on law enforcement and protecting our borders.
To join Customs, you must be either a New Zealand Citizen or a New Zealand Permanent Resident, and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of New Zealand Customs Service Security Clearance and/or New Zealand Government Security Clearance for the position applied for.
For roles that require a New Zealand Customs Service Security Clearance, as a minimum we require employees to be:
- a New Zealand Citizen or a New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years, OR
- a New Zealand Citizen or a New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand and preferably in one or more of the following countries for the last 5 years: either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America.
If you have been absent from New Zealand during the last five years, we will require you to provide overseas police certificates for the time spent living outside of New Zealand. It is essential that you have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed by our security team. If you have lived in other countries that are not listed above, it is unlikely that your application will be processed to the shortlisting stage.
For the New Zealand Customs Service Security Clearance, a clearance might not be granted if vetting enquiries can't be completed. The most common reasons for this occurring are:
- residence outside New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States of America for a period of 5 to 10 years before application for a clearance
- a lack of response from referees provided in your application.
Applicants are also required to complete a Police record check and successful candidates are required to pass a drug test.
If you are unable to meet any of the above requirements, we will be unable to process your application.
Does this sound like you?
It’s important that you think about where your strengths lie, is it interpreting and applying legislation at the front line and behind the scenes? Do you have a high level of judgement and integrity and the flexibility to work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights and public holidays? For the Auckland roles, you will be required to work at various Auckland locations.
If you would like to check your suitability for this role follow the online process. We will not capture this information. It’s designed to give you an indication of what’s possible for you by asking questions that we often ask applicants.
