job description

If you are passionate about keeping Aotearoa’s flora, fauna, and natural resources clean and green, or if you have an interest in biosecurity then this will be the role for you! We are seeking reliable individuals who want to protect this beautiful country. Serious biosecurity issues, including Kauri Dieback disease, rodents, and plague skinks to name a few, are affecting Auckland’s landscape, and we want you to be a champion to prevent any more damage.

You will be educating visitors hiking through Auckland’s tracks and travelling from the waterfront to Hauraki Gulf Islands, on the biosecurity issues currently being faced. As a Biosecurity Champion, you will provide advocacy aimed at increasing the awareness of these issues, and showcase the importance of preventing the spread of pests and diseases. This is an important role that will allow you to be an advocate for New Zealand’s landscapes and natural taonga and our collective wellbeing. With the potential for ongoing work into 2020, this perfect opportunity to take on exciting holiday work and kick-start your new year.

Being a Biosecurity Champion means you will be stationed at popular tracks in local and regional parks across Auckland, and at key waterfront ferry departure points. You will be scheduled on a seven-day roster and will be required to work weekends and public holidays from early December 2019 to February 2020. All Champions must also be comfortable working outdoors all day, sometimes in remote locations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Engaging with people in meaningful conversations, and educating visitors to tracks, parks and islands.
  • Encouraging compliance with biosecurity hygiene requirements, such as checking shoes, bags, gear and vehicles.
  • Collecting data and reporting this to the Biosecurity Champion Coordinator
  • Reporting any issues and non-compliance immediately to the Biosecurity Co-ordinator
  • Monitoring stock levels and distributing collateral as needed
  • Attending briefing and training sessions as required

Must-haves:

  • Has a demonstrated interest in New Zealand biosecurity and conservation issues
  • You must hold a current restricted or full drivers licence
  • Organised and reliable worker
  • Strong communication and people skills
  • Ability to problem solve effectively and make key decisions in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work around a 7-day roster

Desirable but not required:

  • BSc or relevant tertiary qualification in biosecurity, biodiversity, related environmental or agricultural science
  • Knowledge of general native ecology and threats (such as mammalian pest and kauri dieback)
  • Previous experience working in an environmental advocacy role
  • Experience working within, or studying, an ecological or conservation field
  • Holds a current first aid certificate
