job description

WorkSafe New Zealand is now hiring full time permanent Health and Safety Inspectors to work as investigators in their Specialist Interventions team in Invercargill. WorkSafe is the Government’s health and safety regulator charged with leading the biggest shakeup of health and safety in a generation. We’re seeking people who are truly passionate about changing the way all Kiwis’ view health and safety and making sure the injury and fatality rates reduce.

You start as a trainee and progress your way through a series of in-house training courses, on the job experience and coaching until you obtain a Certificate of Appointment giving you powers as an Inspector. Your training doesn't stop there as you continue to build your skills and knowledge to become a highly competent investigator and regulator.

As a Health and Safety Inspector for the Specialist Interventions (Investigations) team you will bring a high level of integrity, excellent judgement, and decision-making skills. You should have an aptitude for learning and be resilient and prepared to work as part of a team. Being able to build rapport with all stakeholders is essential to the role as you’ll be dealing with a wide range of people. Our investigations inspectors manage cases by investigating incidents and events where people have been hurt or a fatality may have occurred. All our inspectors enforce the law when they see non-compliance so being firm and fair are essential quantities.

The must haves:

  • Be a NZ Citizen or NZ Permanent Resident/Resident
  • Have a full driver license with an ability to drive a manual car
  • Show commitment to follow policies and procedures
  • Can write business documents and reports
  • Be computer literate
  • Be flexible to work across locations and once warranted, and be rostered for after-hours and weekend work when required

What experience do you need?

Ideally, we’re looking to hear from people who already have experience in investigations across all industries whether in a health and safety space, another regulator or law enforcement. If you don’t have this experience in Health and safety assessments, audits, or investigations but you believe you have the right skillset to become an investigator, we’re keen to hear from you too.
