Stats NZ has an opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated leader to join their Field Collections team. Stats NZ we have a vision to unleash the power of data to change lives. The Local Area Leader is at the forefront of this vision, leading our Enter Location-based team sourcing data from households.

About us

The Field Collections team is responsible for collecting survey information from households and businesses across New Zealand. The information we collect is used by our business to produce meaningful stories about New Zealand to help people make informed decisions.

About this role

As a Local Area Leader you will be responsible for leading a team of Survey Interviewers who are the face of Stats NZ in dealing with households and businesses. This is a hands-on, highly engaging role where you can utilise your strong leadership and motivational skills to help your team be the best they can be. Your professional approach will provide invaluable support to your manager, colleagues and team alike. Your positive, flexible, enthusiastic attitude, and willingness to participate proactively, will make you a key member of our team.

Your broad role as a Local Area Leader will see you:

  • Lead day to day operations
  • Provide strong and fair leadership
  • Develop yourself and others
  • Undertake survey interviewing
  • Communicate effectively when working remotely
  • Demonstrate a proactive awareness of Health and Safety in the workplace

This role will include both evening and weekend work to support your team.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in leading a highly motivated and effective team
  • Experience in communicating at multiple levels within an organisation
  • Have extensive people skills, life skills and work experience to deliver in a role that operates with high autonomy, needing discretion and judgement
  • Have experience in successfully supporting training delivery and/or coaching others
  • Have an understanding of challenges faced managing remote staff
  • An ability to think outside the square
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and competent Excel / Word skills
  • A passion for change and the ability to use it as an opportunity to improve

Specific requirements:

  • Be located in Christchuch
  • Work from home, but travel regularly around the Canterbury region to support the team
  • Be confident with technology
  • Have a current clean New Zealand driver's license
  • Own a reliable vehicle
  • Have access to a broadband internet connection at home
  • Be physically fit and able to spend long periods of time walking, standing, sitting and negotiate varied terrain (including steps)
