job description

The Safety Technician will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves and is expected to contribute to the development of effective regulatory systems and processes.

The key responsibilities of the Technical Officer are:

  • Industry improvement & education: Engage with sector stakeholders and duty-holders and
    industry bodies to encourage the development and
    uptake of best practice
  • Relationship Management: Inform and influence consumers, the public, industry stakeholders regarding the benefits of, and approaches to, compliance with legislation, excellent health and safety management in regards to Electricity and Gas, including connecting clients with other government
  • Regulatory compliance: Inspect and/or investigate operations with regard to legislative, regulatory and industry standards and practices as appropriate.
  • Inspection and Assessments: Carry out regular risk based audit inspections and related work on installations, sites and products, in accordance with Agency operational procedures and guidelines
  • Immediate Response: Be prepared to respond to notified serious harm and emergency situations around New Zealand both during and outside normal office hours.
  • Investigations: Undertake or support investigations of incidents, accidents, reported unsafe or non-compliant plant, installations or products, or into generic complaints with a particular emphasis on identifying causal effects, compliance, corrective action and enforcement action with a view to changing sector behaviours in a sustained way for future compliance and safety outcomes.
  • Compliance and Enforcement: Undertake or support enforcement activities in accordance with Agency procedures and processes. Use enforcement and persuasive.

A key part of this role would be around relationship management that includes constructive working relationships with work colleagues and external stakeholders to enhance understanding and cooperation needed to achieve desired results.

responsibilities

As a Technical Officer you will play a key position in the energy safety team. You will be
responsible for undertaking a range of investigation, assessment, inspection, policy
development, advisory, and enforcement-related activities to ensure compliance with the
Electricity and Gas Acts, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) and related
legislation by effectively identifying and managing risks to achieve world-leading standards
of performance in health and safety.
