WorkSafe New Zealand - Health and Safety Inspectors - Whangarei

WorkSafe New Zealand is now hiring a full time permanent Health and Safety Inspector for a role in Whangarei. WorkSafe is the Government’s health and safety regulator charged with leading the biggest shakeup of health and safety in a generation. We’re seeking people who are truly passionate about changing the way New Zealanders view health and safety and making sure the injury and fatality rates come down.

As a Health and Safety Inspector you will bring a high level of integrity, excellent judgement and decision making skills and an aptitude for learning. Being able to build rapport with business owners and workers is essential to the role as you’ll be dealing with a wide range of people. Some of our inspectors proactively assess workplaces and engage with workers and employers, while others investigate incidents/accidents where people have been hurt. All of our inspectors enforce the law when they see non-compliance so being firm, fair and resilient are essential quantities.

You start as a trainee (starting salary of approximately $63K) and progress your way through a series of in-house training courses, on the job experience and coaching until you obtain a Certificate of Appointment giving you powers as an Inspector. Your training doesn't stop there as you continue to build your skills and knowledge to become a highly competent regulator.

To be considered you must:

• Demonstrate excellent thinking skills so you can interpret, apply and enforce the law
• Have great communication skills in both verbal and writing (there's quite a lot of letter, notice and report writing)
• Be flexible to work across Location and once warranted, be rostered for after-hours and weekend work
• Be computer literate and committed to following policies and procedures
• Have a full drivers vehicle drivers’ license and the ability to drive a manual car
• Be a NZ Citizen or hold NZ Permanent Residency

We’re always keen to hear from people who already have experience in health and safety assessments, audits or investigations or who have already worked in a job that requires applying the law/regulations; however we are also open to hearing from applicants with industry experience.

Go to if you want to find out about the training and progression process and also how the salary structure works, plus you can see videos from some of our staff. Join us, and you will play a vital role in ensuring everyone who goes to work comes home healthy and safe.
