job description

Your new company

As a Customs Officer you’ll play a key role in protecting the interests of Aotearoa. You will be identifying and preventing potential security and community risks from coming in and out of the country.

With a high focus on law enforcement and securing NZ’s border, this integral role encompasses a wide range of tasks from identifying risks and investigations, to performing assurance and audits.

The starting salary for a Customs Officer is $47,824 per annum + deployment allowance, and you will be required to work across a variety of shifts including nights, weekends and public holidays. You will know your shift pattern in advance so you can plan your life around work, not work around your life.

Why a career at Customs

You may be looking for a change where you can impact your community, or you may feel now is the right time to start a brand new career for life. This is an opportunity to actively play a part in protecting and defending NZ’s borders and community.

You will initially begin your career with the NZ Customs Service as a Trainee Customs Officer, commencing a comprehensive training programme where you'll learn through classroom, on-the-job training and assessments. This will provide you with the foundation to be an excellent Customs Officer.

As you learn more about your role within Customs you will have the opportunity to get involved in:

  • Facilitating passengers and goods in and out of NZ, note taking and writing reports;
  • Questioning passengers and undertaking search activities such as checking baggage
  • Facilitating legitimate trade and travel and collecting import and export data;
  • Intercepting contraband (such as illegal drugs) and investigating and prosecuting offences;
  • Checking cargo, mail, travellers and assessing and collecting duty and GST on imports;
  • Enforcing import and export restrictions and prohibitions and auditing traders to ensure a fair trading environment.

Essentials for your new role

To be also considered for this role you will need:

  • To be a NZ Citizen OR NZ Permanent Residency (*full context below)
  • To have a full class 1 NZ motor vehicle drivers’ license
  • To have a good level of fitness and physical ability so you can complete the full range of duties in the role.

*Working with Customs NZ requires you to be a New Zealand Citizen or hold New Zealand Permanent Residency who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years, OR Permanent Residency of New Zealand, who has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 5 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

In addition, you will be required to pass a pre-employment medical assessment, security check and drug test.
