About the Role
Are you a senior strategic advisor with deep expertise in assessment design and system-level change? We are seeking an experienced Principal Advisor – Assessment to join a transformative, system-wide curriculum and assessment change initiative.
Working in close partnership with the Assessment Design Lead, you will provide expert strategic leadership and advice to drive the design, development, and implementation curriculum assessment settings. This role plays a key part in shaping programme direction, influencing decision-makers, and ensuring assessment products are evidence-informed, practical, and responsive to the needs of ākonga, kaiako, whānau, and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Advice & Leadership: Provide high-level, evidence-based advice to senior leaders on assessment settings, risks, and opportunities using data and sector insights.
- Assessment Design Support: Partner with the Assessment Design Lead to ensure subject assessment models are coherent, inclusive, and future-focused.
- Stakeholder Management: Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, sector leaders, and delivery partners while upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and Māori-Crown partnership.
- Communications & Guidance: Produce clear, compelling briefings, guidance, and resources, translating complex concepts for diverse audiences.
- Collaborative Engagement: Work seamlessly across programme teams, subject matter experts, and implementation leads to turn strategy into practical delivery.
Key Capabilities & Experience
- Strategic Assessment Expertise: Proven track record of strategic thinking and translating high-level assessment/curriculum strategy into practical execution.
- Machinery of Government: Deep understanding of government settings and how system policy translates into operational environments.
- Cultural Responsiveness: Demonstrated commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, working inclusively, and supporting Māori Medium pathways.
- Communication & Influence: Exceptional written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence senior decision-makers and write clear briefings.
- Relationship & Engagement Skills: Strong track record in building trust, managing complex stakeholder relationships, and working alongside diverse groups.
- Adaptability: Able to navigate ambiguity, drive progress in dynamic project environments, and solve complex problems.
