Randstad has partnered with an established, privately-owned civil infrastructure contractor delivering key residential subdivisions, bulk earthworks, drainage reticulation, and roading packages across the wider Auckland region.
With a solid forward workload confirmed across major land development projects and public infrastructure renewals, they are looking to bring on a hands-on Civil Project Engineer to take ownership of site delivery packages.
If you are currently working for a large Tier-1 contractor where you feel stuck behind paperwork, or at a smaller outfit lacking system support, this role hits the right balance. You will work directly alongside seasoned Project Managers who provide genuine mentorship while giving you the autonomy to run your crews, manage subbies, and drive physical progress on site.
What You’ll Do
Working closely with the Project Manager and Site Foremen, you will bridge the gap between engineering drawings, council compliance, and physical site construction.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing day-to-day site engineering operations across bulk cut/fill earthworks, stormwater/wastewater drainage, and pavement/roading packages.
- Developing, maintaining, and closing out Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and Quality Assurance (QA) documentation to secure Auckland Council and Watercare sign-offs.
- Coordinating directly with internal plant operators, pipelaying crews, and specialist subcontractors to maintain site momentum.
- Managing two- to four-week lookahead schedules, tracking material deliveries, and procuring site resources.
- Reviewing engineering drawings, raising and resolving RFIs, and collaborating with consultant engineers.
- Assisting the PM with monthly progress measures, dayworks, and variation tracking under NZS 3910 contract conditions.
- Championing on-site health, safety, and environmental controls (including erosion and sediment control compliance).
About You
We are looking for a grounded, practical civil engineer who enjoys being out on-site, solves problems quickly, and communicates clearly with both machine operators and clients.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A recognised Bachelor of Civil Engineering, NZDE (Civil), or NZQA Level 6/7 equivalent.
- 3 to 6 years of civil contracting experience on New Zealand infrastructure or land development sites.
- Solid on-site understanding of deep drainage installation, earthworks methodologies, and underground utilities.
- Hands-on experience with ITPs, site QA packs, and council compliance sign-off procedures.
- Practical familiarity with NZS 3910 contracts and site variation processes.
- Strong interpersonal skills capable of giving clear direction to site crews while building positive relationships with client reps and consultants.
- A valid full New Zealand Class 1 Driver’s Licence and valid working rights for New Zealand.
What’s on Offer
- Competitive Base Package: $105,000 – $130,000 base salary (commensurate with hands-on site experience).
- Fully Maintained Company Ute: Modern 4WD double-cab ute with fuel card (personal use included) + work phone and laptop.
- Real Career Path to PM: Direct mentorship from experienced PMs who will step you through commercial management, programming, and financial reporting.
- Modern Plant & Tech: Access to well-maintained machinery, GPS machine control, and efficient cloud-based site management software.
- Supportive Culture: A down-to-earth, collaborative site team with regular Friday team BBQs, zero corporate bureaucracy, and management that backs your decisions on site.
