Senior Database Engineer (AWS & PostgreSQL)
The Role
We are seeking a permanent Senior Database Engineer to join a well-established, environmentally focused organization based in Auckland. Combining DevOps and infrastructure engineering, you will manage, secure, and optimize complex database environments. This role requires a pragmatic professional comfortable working in a fast-paced team that utilizes the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
Key Duties
- Database Management: Manage, maintain, and optimize AWS Aurora PostgreSQL global databases to ensure high availability and security.
- Cloud Engineering: Design and implement database solutions in AWS using CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Production Support: Triage and resolve production database incidents, diagnose query issues, and maintain disaster recovery orchestration.
- System Optimization: Monitor and benchmark database performance, and administer PostGIS and trusted language extensions (TLE).
- Migration & Delivery: Support legacy system migrations and participate in cutover and go-live activities (occasionally outside standard business hours).
Skills & Experience Required
- Core Experience: Extensive background as a Database Administrator or Reliability Engineer with a strong focus on PostgreSQL and AWS services (e.g., RDS, Aurora).
- Infrastructure as Code: Practical experience managing AWS resources using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform in production environments.
- Specialized Knowledge: Experience with spatial databases and geospatial data, particularly PostGIS, along with database automation scripting (Python, Bash).
- Delivery Methodology: Experience operating within an Agile environment, with familiarity or certification in SAFe highly desirable.
- Problem Solving: Excellent incident resolution skills, a continuous improvement mindset, and knowledge of data security practices[cite: 14].
